The rise of citizen journalism or social media is transforming journalistic practice worldwide. Newsrooms and newsroom practices are being restructured globally to meet the challenges of this new form of media. This paper will examine the implications for the profession of journalism but most importantly will dissect the implications for the disciplinary base of journalism within the academy. In particular the paper will focus on how the rise of this new form of media may compel journalism as discipline to secure and strengthen its interdisciplinary foundations.

Katrina Oakham was a journalist in Australia and the United Kingdom for almost 15 years before becoming a trainer and consultant in the United Kingdom. She was head of journalism at the East Surrey College in England and was an examiner for the National Council for the Training of Journalists. She is the editor of Don't Bury The Lead, the creator of the CD ROM HotCopy and is co-author of Reporting in a Multi Media World.
