The presentation is based on observations and meetings with the management teams from nine companies in Germany and Switzerland identified as sustainable organisations (using elements from Avery’s Sustainable Leadership Grid). It was observed that sustainable organisations possess a strong congruence between the values they espouse and the values that drive corporate activities and decision making processes. The strength of this alignment is due to the presence of reflection as a core organisational capability. For organisations that do not possess the same congruence, the considered introduction of events that trigger reflection on this gap and which values actually underlie core business activities is a form of leadership because it aims to promote strategic learning and to transform. Furthermore, reflection on the value of a long term perspective will have the greatest influence towards sustainability because it demands a strong congruence between espoused values and the values in action; compelling an organisation into change.
