Dramatic Effects of Iranian Old Literature in Orientalist Discourse

To add a paper, Login.

Using dramatic effects of Old Persian literature, the contemporary drama of Iran has basic theoretical capacities to being put forward into a global discourse. The last three decades hits of Iranian alternative cinema and ritual plays in the West are the signs of emerging a late intercultural movement that portrays a new horizon for the future relations.

This thesis purposes to study the orientalist routes of recent evolutions in western dramatic theory impacted by Iranian innovations, using a comparative reading of E. Said's socio-historical approach to the Orient. Orientalism (1978), as a dominant cultural discourse in the postmodern era, will plan, dramatically, the new outline of these upcoming relations.

Assuming the recent dramatic interactions of Iranian and western artists could be effects of some paradigm shifting in new post-colonial era, this research attempts to recognize and re-establish the global place of Iranian late drama. The approach will examine the necessary grounds for globalizing Iranian new drama through an orientalist discourse, comparing the recent dramatic experiences of European artists with the similar adapted effects of Old Persian literature(like Mevlana's Mesnevi, Attar's Manteq-al-tir and Khayam's robaee-yat) re-presented inTaziye or alternative films.

In conclusion, it aims to realize the new outline of intercultural relations of the West vis-à-vis Iran, understanding first how Iranian literary- dramatic innovations influenced the West through the last decades.
